Time seems to have flown over the last few weeks – we have already passed the first eventful half of 2022. Fittingly, the German Retail Association (HDE) recently published current figures and forecasts for retail sales. Here what you should definitely know about it:
📌 First things first: in general, the HDE forecasts a two percent decline in retail sales (adjusted for inflation). A current survey by the HDE in which 44 % of 800 companies surveyed expect to record less revenue in 2022 also shows a similar trend.
📌 Compared to the previous year, only just about half of the trading companies were able to increase their revenue in the first half of the year. Expectations for the second half are even more modest: for the second half of the year, only 1/5 of the trading companies expect to be able to increase their revenue.
📌 Stefan Genth, CEO of the HDE, sees two main reasons for this development: On the one hand, rising inflation is currently causing the purchasing power of customers to fall sharply, and on the other hand, the costs of companies are rising.
In order to curb these developments as much as possible, the HDE is calling for various political measures. It remains to be seen how and whether these will be implemented.
