Grade 5 for Germany’s digitization
Tim Höttges (Telekom CEO) gives Germany’s digitization a grade of five in an EU comparison. He underscores this damning verdict in a recent interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung using the DESI index. The index compares the progress of digitization in the EU member states on the basis of criteria such as network coverage, digital skills, Internet use, and the degree of digitization in business and the public sector.
Germany in midfield
🇩🇪Deutschland ranked 13th in 2022 compared to other EU countries, trailing France. At the top of this list are Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands, while Greece, Bulgaria and Romania bring up the rear. Germany scores 52.88, just above the EU average of 52.28.
📉In the area of network infrastructure and bandwidth, Germany ranks fourth in the EU comparison. By contrast, the level of digitization of public services has slipped from position 13 to 18.
The network performs better
📈Tim Höttges gives a positive assessment of network quality and singles out his own company, Deutsche Telekom, for particular praise. He emphasizes that Germany, as the world’s fourth-largest economy, should be a leader in digitization. His awarding of marks should serve as a wake-up call for the country. In terms of network quality, he would even award a B.
The future
🤖Höttges also comments on the future of artificial intelligence, which he sees as a “gamechanger” that will simplify our lives.Nevertheless, he warns of challenges that will initially delay productive use.
🇺🇸In the U.S., 5,000 jobs were recently cut at Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile, some of which were replaced by AI. Similar developments could be on the horizon in Germany.
