At first glance, this news sounds rather bizarre: The island state of Tuvalu is the first nation to begin shifting into the metaverse. But what is this actually all about?
🏝️ Tuvalu is located in the Pacific Ocean. The island state is one of the nations that will suffer greatly from the climate crisis in the future. Simon Kofe, Foreign Minister of Tuvalu, assumes that his nation will not survive the effects such as rising sea levels and droughts. If climate change continues unchanged, this will already be the case in about 80 years.
🏝️ Why the step into the metaverse? According to Kofe, the digital version of Tuvalu is intended to preserve the cultural heritage and thus show future generations in particular what the home of Tuvalu’s 12,000 inhabitants was like.
🏝️ Tuvalu is not the only nation that will have to struggle with the climate crisis in the future and could thus become a pioneer for similar projects.
